dear santa

With the blink of an eye, christmas is right around the corner.  our little nathan (now 4yrs old) is very much into the christmas spirit.  today, he demanded a letter to santa so that he won't be forgotten in this season of giving.  and to his exact words, his letter reads like this --

dear santa,

i wish you could come to my house so you could bring presents, and you could stay because we set up everything.  so, we have a lot of time left.  so we need something to bring.  so, i like spider-man toys and transformers, so bring it to me please.

sincerely,
nathan
goh

ps.  and power rangers jungle fury and all kinds of power rangers, but when they're not here, then just go somewhere else!  so, we have to go, we are waiting for you to come.  love, nathan.

pss.  and don't forget, i love lollipops.

has it been that long?

i haven't blogged for quite some time now.  today i finally decided to blog again...and i didn't know how to create a new entry.  boohoo.  i am becoming one step closer to a technology-fearing elderly.

for the long weekend, we had the privilege of attending thomas and selena's wedding in NY.  (we as in me and raymond ONLY).  this was the first time we went anywhere without the kids since samuel was born, and it actually felt pretty unnatural.  we tried to get as much out of our trip as possible, meaning we ate our food while it was hot, slept until we were ready to wake up, and stayed out past 10 at night.  but all in all, we couldn't fully enjoy ourselves because we just missed the kids so much.  it's so true when my friend elizabeth said that all day she looks forward to the moment her kids go to bed, but as soon as they are asleep, she goes and looks through their pictures.  it's a love hate thing.  i can't explain it.

we got to eat some really good chinese banquet food from the wedding reception, but raymond had his own list of "must-eats" in NY, which includes: NY style pizza, cheese ddukbokki from K-town, and any street vendor food.  now.  pizza is alright.  cheese ddukbokki sounds a little weird but i might give it a shot, but street vendor is diarrhea in the making.  i don't know why i think that way, but i can't get rid of this image of the vendor picking his nose the minute before i order my food.  i suppose it could happen in any restaurant too, they just pick their nose somewhere more discreet.  and i don't know where this dirty street food mentality is from, because i grew up eating street food from taiwan (probably the king of dirty street food), but as i'm getting older, i'm finding it less and less appealing to me.  am i getting smarter?  or snobbier?

to end my story, we finished our long wedding weekend tired and missing the kids tremendously, only to come home to one kid with a bad runny nose, and another one with a bad attitude.  note to self: next time we're out without the kids, try to enjoy ourselves just a little bit more.

Nathan the skinny

Nathan is skinny, and it's not because I don't feed him.  He just doesn't like to eat much, regardless if it's an actual meal or if it's snacks.  My in-laws always think he's too thin.  Every time they see him (about once a month), they think he's thinner than before.  So with that growing rate, he's probably no more than some dry bones in their eyes.  But I guess he does look very skinny next to Samuel, to whom they just smile and nod.  So about once a month Nathan gets a nutrient boost from the grandparents, and he actually comes back looking fatter from one day of eating.  His diet usually consists of a smoothie/milkshake, followed by some cookies/dduk/fruits, then dinner (sometimes with a shake on the side), then fruits/dduk, and finally some milk and cookies before we head out.  Whenever we come back from the grandparents, Nathan's tummy is always rock hard...actually all of our tummies.  I think since Raymond's always been a good eater, my in-laws compare everyone to him.  One time Nathan was eating half a chicken sandwich from Burger King, and my mother-in-law looked at him and said "when your daddy was your age, he would eat a whole big mac by himself and have another sandwich."  At that moment I realized why she always thinks I barely touched my food when I was stuffing myself to my maximum capacity.  It was at that same moment I thanked God that I could work only part-time because my kids don't eat that much.  I'm okay with skinny Nathan.  We'll just do the fat boost once a month.

Life with 2 kids is a lot different than life with one.  For one thing, there's much less time to myself, and a lot more time spent on feeding/changing diaper/cleaning/feeding.  But more importantly, life feels full.  Our Honda Element is now at its max capacity.  Any more kids and we'll have to stack them.

Poor Nathan is getting a lot less attention these days, so at times when he has to be by himself, he indulges in video games.  Now, I had always wished I could play video games when I was a kid, so I let Nathan play his fair share.  This was all good, up until one day when he said he didn't want to go to the playground because he wants to play more video games.  Another day he was in the middle of gaming and asked me for some milk.  When I looked over this is what he did:

Holding the cup with his belly so he could use his hands to play game.  That was when I realized that it's time to reintroduce him to this thing called friends.

Speaking of friends, Nathan recently celebrated his 3rd birthday with some of his playgroup friends.  He got a bunch of cars and of course, video game.  But this time it's Leap Frog video games.  So at least it's more educational than Super Mario.  He is one lucky kid.  When I was his age, I didn't have any video games nor any friends.  I think I might have like 2 friends, and one of them was imaginary.

On a different note, baby Samuel is growing bigger by the minute.  He enjoys eating and sleeping, and he likes to smile a lot.  I must say it gives me a great sense of accomplishment to raise a fat baby.  I think 1/5 of his weight goes to his cheeks...the cheeks of my pride and joy.  Raymond thinks they remind him of Dduk (rice cake).  They're very soft and they jiggle when I burp him.

So there's my update on being a parent of two.  Now I must go find Nathan a last minute costume for his first trick or treat.  We were thinking of making him a costume, but i scratched the idea after picturing him going as a poor kid.
